An ESA can be any domesticated animal that provides emotional support – dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds, and more. There is no special training required. Emotional support animals do not require specialized task training like service animals. Your animal simply needs to be non-aggressive, manageable, and under your control.

This is where the contrast with a service dog matters. Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks directly related to a person’s disability – a guide dog navigating obstacles, a psychiatric service dog interrupting anxiety episodes, or psychiatric service animals alerting to medical events. Only dogs (and in limited cases, miniature horses) can be classified as service animals under ADA. ESAs provide comfort but do not perform tasks like service animals do. Federal laws under the Disabilities Act require service dogs to demonstrate a specific task; ESAs have different rules entirely.

Fair Housing Act: The FHA protects emotional support animals in housing. Housing providers must consider a reasonable accommodation request when supported by a valid ESA letter. If the accommodation is granted, a dog’s presence (or any support animal) cannot be grounds for a pet fee, and breed restrictions are set aside.
